Advocacy of ‘hate speech’ laws backfires on UK muslims
A student who said on Twitter that people wearing Help for Heroes T-shirts “deserved to be beheaded” was arrested after complaining to police about threatening replies, a court has heard.
Deyka Ayan Hassan, from Harrow, sent the tweet in the aftermath of Drummer Lee Rigby’s death in Woolwich, south-east London.
The 21-year-old student admitted sending a malicious electronic message.
She was ordered to complete 250 hours of unpaid work by Hendon magistrates.
Drummer Rigby was wearing the charity’s T-shirt when he was attacked on 22 May.
Hassan, an English and politics undergraduate at Kingston University, said she had sent the tweet “as a joke” about the design of the T-shirt.
Chairman of the bench, Nigel Orton, told her she could have been jailed for the tweet but magistrates accepted she had not known it was a soldier who had been killed when she sent it.
“The tragic events in Woolwich that day have created a context which made this tweet appear extreme,” he said.
“It had a huge impact and clearly caused offence and distress. We accept you didn’t intend to cause harm and you felt it was a joke.
“Your act was naive and foolish and without regard to the general public at a time of heightened sensitivity.”
The court heard Hassan’s father works in Somalia for organisations including US Aid and Prevent which aim to combat extremism.
He is also a former “associate advisor for policing diversity” to the Metropolitan Police.
Don’t you just love it when the muslims call for laws restricting and prosecuting free speech, and then it comes back to bite them in the ass?
Sadly this just means greater authoritarian power for the UK, but hopefully more events like this will make muslims think twice before ‘complaining to police about threatening replies’. Doubt they’ll ever get it though, I suspect this woman probably left the court thinking the problem is that the system is prejudiced against her as a muslim.
Islamic censorship of satire comes to Australia
The student newspaper of the Australian National University, Woroni, recently published online their account of what happened when they attempted to publish a piece of satire on Islam.
Over the course of a week, the Woroni board was twice summoned to the Chancelry, individually threatened with disciplinary action along with the authors of the piece, and informed that Woroni’s funding allocation could be compromised.
The infographic was the fifth in a series that satirised facets of different religions; chronologically, Catholicism, Scientology, Mormonism, and Judaism. The “Advice from Religion” piece published in Edition 5 focused on Islam.
The Chancelry’s position is that the piece posed a threat to the ANU’s reputation and security.
“In a world of social media, there is potential for material such as the article in question to gain attention and traction in the broader world and potentially harm the interests of the University and the university community. This was most clearly demonstrated by the Jyllands- Posten cartoon controversy … and violent protests in Sydney on September 15 last year.”In light of these concerns, the Chancelry asked for an apology and an official public retraction of the piece.
Like every edition so far this year, Edition 5 was later uploaded as a PDF document to the Woroni website and Facebook page, including the back page. Following this, the Chancelry demanded a second, non-negotiable meeting with the Woroni board, and the three authors of the piece, attended by Marnie Hughes-Warrington, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic). At this meeting, all Woroni editors and all three authors of the piece were threatened with disciplinary notice under Section 3.1(b) of the ANU Disciplinary Statue, should the PDF remain online.

UK Census: ‘No Religion’ increases from 14% in 2001 to 25% in 2011
Some findings from the UK Census 2011:
- 25.1% are of ‘no religion’, with a further 7.2% of ‘religion not stated’
- 36.5% of those aged 18-29 are of ‘no religion’
- 56% of children under the age of 5 are labeled with a religion
- 0.14% are muslims of white UK ethnicity
- Half of muslims were born outside Europe
- 22.3% of muslims are under the age of 10
- There are as many non-whites of ‘no religion’ as there are Buddhists, Jews and Sikhs combined
- Since 2001, muslims have increased by 74.9%, whilst ‘no religion’ has increased by 93.8%, and Christians have actually declined by 10.3%

Pedestrian beheaded in Islamic attack in Britain
A man believed to be a soldier has been beheaded in an attack on a street near the Woolwich barracks in London, witnesses report.
Metropolitan Police Commander Simon Letchford confirmed tonight that two men were shot by armed officers.
Prime Minister David Cameron has described the killing as “truly shocking” and said he had asked the Home Secretary Theresa May to chair a meeting of Cobra, the Government’s emergency committee.
The Government is reported to be treating it as a suspected terrorist incident. Mrs May tonight confirmed she has been briefed by the Director General of the Security Service MI5 on the “sickening and barbaric” incident in Woolwich.
The Press Association is reporting that one Whitehall source said the attackers were heard to shout ‘Allah Akbar’.
One witness, identified only as James, said he and his partner saw two men attack a young man aged around 20 like he was “a piece of meat”.
“They were hacking at this poor guy, literally,” he told LBC radio. “They were hacking at him, chopping him, cutting him. These two guys were crazed. They were just animals. They dragged him from the pavement and dumped his body in the middle of the road and left his body there.”
“They were oblivious to anything, they were more worried about having their photo taken, running up and down the road.”
