October 2011
Just discovered that I can get an unsecured $3000 loan at 3.99% p.a. over two years from National Australia Bank (NAB). It also has no fees at all. It’s meant to a non-profit offering to those on low income, and so it has rather strict criteria, but I tick every box. For those unaware, unsecured loans have an interest rate of ~12-17% p.a., and also usually come with monthly fees + setup...

Are we of one mind, or are we of many?
In studying Multiple Personality Disorder a few weeks ago I came across something interesting in my reading. It proposed that rather than there being a certain ‘self’ that we each have, personal identity is only a figurehead for all the different selves we have within us. An analogy was used: Consider the USA. As a country, it has a certain kind of personality. It hates Communism, is...

The End Of The Affair, The Ministry of Fear & OMH
“If only it were possible to love without injury – fidelity isn’t enough: I had been faithful to Anne and yet I had injured her. The hurt is in the act of possession: we are too small in mind and body to possess another person without pride or to be possessed without humiliation. In a way I was glad that my wife had struck out at me again – I had forgotten her pain for too long, and...

What crime did this woman commit?
This picture was sent to Dr. Homa Darabi from a woman in Iran. This picture was taken 20 days after she was lashed fifty times for being present at a family gathering where men other than her father and brother were present. Her crime? She is a single woman. It is forbidden for women to be present under the same roof with men other than their close relatives (father, brother and son) without...

A week before the events of September 11, 2001, I was on a panel with Dennis Prager, who is one of America’s better-known religious broadcasters. He challenged me in public to answer what he called a “straight yes/no question,” and I happily agreed. Very well, he said. I was to imagine myself in a strange city as the evening was coming on. Toward me I was to imagine that I saw a...
